UNIT 2: THE EDGE - LANDSCAPE ART

Initial Observation Drawings of Landscape: 1

We framed an area behind the school that included the landscape of the mountains, we were then noted to draw two drawings of the landscape we had framed. The first would be done in charcoal, compressed charcoal and white chalk. These three materials would enable to create shade and tone, to define areas using black and white. On the other hand, the second drawing included just a pencil and to be done of our perception of a "restless" line. I chose to place a "shade" and highlight areas of the second drawing of the frame through placing jumpy layers of lines as you can see aside.

Analysing 2 artworks

1 - JMV Turner 1775-1851  UK:  The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire

  1. Function, Purpose of the artwork

"The decline of the Carthaginian empire" is a representation of the many wars between the Roman empire and Carthaginian empire leading to a results of downfall in the Carthaginian empire. It was created to represent "imperial spirit" hence showing that yes the Carthaginian empire had fallen but the empire spirit was still in place. As the investigation above stated Turner was in the region of the battlefield of Napoleon when this painting was painted and displayed his interest for empires and their downfall - Napoleon's downfall. I believe he intended to display his own version of the Carthaginian empire downfall as it was a large interest in their time within the people.

2.  Context

The artist Joseph Mallord William Turner lived and created art in London throughout his life, he visited and traveled the world frequently and was in Holland and Belgium at the time of the display of this painting, as he was visiting many battlefields such as the Rhineland and the Waterloo. The painting itself was made for himself as none other commissions were stated.

I believe his background of travel and interest in historical events influenced the creation of his work on this painting specifically on the Cartagian empire, these events would have brought him experience and primary sources.

At the time the downfall of Napoleon a political circumstance would have brought a large impact on how Turner saw of the downfall of empire as it was stated that he believed the imperial downfall was inevitable. The Napoleon downfall took place in 1915, 2 years before the painting was created. Along with this, in his time there was an immense interest in the Roman and Carthaginian empires which reflects a reason of which why he would have created it for that typical audience in Europe yet it was not commissioned.

HIs genre of work is associated with  “history painting” and “landscape” as it incorporates components of both.

In summary, the context of Turners life events in terms of travelling and political and social circumstance has brought his interest to historical events regarding empires hence why his panting represents the decline of the Carthaginian empire.

2.  Formal qualities

  • Name of Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner

  • Name of Piece: "The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire"

  • Date: 1817

  • Location: Belgium

  • Materials: Canvas, Oil paints

  • Size: 239 x 170 cm

  • Objects in painting: Large Roman buildings, sunset, harbour, people, weaponry, sky, trees, stairs, statues

  • Focal point: Sunset

  • Interesting fact: Many of the people watching sunset are women

  • Mood: ending, relief, closure, peace

  • Shapes: Many buildings so their realism is shown specifically by shading, light change, 3D inside the painting, realistic people, all done through light and colour. Lights focal point is from the sunset. Geometric shapes.

  • Space: Many buildings, people and weaponry on bottom half and side of painting but a large majority is open space of the sky and sunset. Linear perspective; sunset is blurry and far and objects near the bottom of canvas are clear and defined. Space is used proportionately meaning everything's size looks realistic.

  • Pattern: Engraved repetitive patterns on the buildings, patterns of clothing on people; size shape and colour of clothing. Geometry patterns on buildings.

  • Texture: Vivid brushstrokes on sky and water, realistic waves so the water is shiny. Blocks of colour on buildings to seem hard. Overall appearance is very combined lots of rough then smooth texture, large variation.

  • Colour: Water colour contrasts with sky, sunset colours are calm and soothing representing the set of the pain into calmness. People are dressed in cool colours a representation of the pain they have gone through. Majority of the colours are warm and soothing but the bases of the ground and people are reds and blues a significant contrast, no harmony there. Harmony of many pastel shades in the sky.

  • Composition: Oval shape, the water and sky create a U. asymmetrical. The sky is arranged at the top while surrounding and foreground is filled with geometric buildings and people. Eye is drawn to sky.

  • Note: communication of a roslving or delcine as sun is setting

2 - Robert Smithson 20th century US: Spiral Jetty

  1. Function, Purpose of the artwork

The spiral jetty was created for the purpose of bringing together land and water from the “Great Salt lake” in Utah. The artist intended to flourish the land and combine two areas of our earth. An original and magnificent idea benefitting the environment as it will flourish the land, also reminding one of the vastness and power of nature. A new outlook on landscape art much diverse from photography or a painting.

2.  Context

The artist of the piece Robert Smithson lived from 1938 to 1973, the American artist was known to create art for the earth and exhibited his work worldwide from Italy to New York all around. He believed in the concept of entropy immensely, a key purpose of his work. The spiral jetty was not commissioned for anyone but his own purpose of creating art.

Robert Smithson had an amazing education on painting but his interests consisted of geology and mineralogy which may have influenced his subermesion of entropy in his work that nothing is permanent and will be further perished, a finite mindset. Also an addition to relating his art to something he hand interest in.

I believe Robert Smithson did not care for the social, cultural or political history of the time as many state he created his own way of influence on others to create a concept of “land art”. He impacted the art created further onward on a basis of including the earth and in open areas, creating an audience that followed a path like his. The date of the spiral jetty is 3 years before his death, this may have signified his last remarks and finite work he wanted to leave behind.

The artist would be associated with “landscape” art in a diverse form, it is very contemporary and out of the box. I believe it is related to psychology, his mindset impacted the input he placed onto his surrounding and the technology/science he had access to to create wide scale art like the spiral jetty

Overall, I believe a constant symbolic communication in Robert Smithson’s art along with this specific piece is that nothing is forever it is dependent on the earth, so to create art that includes the earth would bring much more outcome and impact.

Study: JMV Turner 1775-1851  UK:  The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire

Study based on JMV Turner's use of various brushwork on the sky component of his piece "The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire".

The sky in the form of a sunset represents the downfall of the Carthaginian Empire better known to be the calm resolvation.

Applying:

Shades used to display sunset:

Understanding components of sky using brushstroke and colour:

Various types of brushstrokes used in sky:

Outcome of study on JMV Turner's Piece:

Through this experimentation my understanding has developed on the meaning behind the sunset in this painting and why it is the focal point; the sunset includes a range of diverse bright colours that no area of the piece has along with various forms of brushstrokes hence making it realistic as if clouds were placed upon the sky. The brushstrokes upon the sides move downwards as if resolving and bringing together the sky which was technique 3 in the pocture above. Overall, these two factors played a huge role in bringing attention to the sky hence a meaning to why every human fugure in the painting is staring as if it holds a miagical component, which it does; the resolving of a long harsh battle.

Brush and brushstrokes play in watercolour + watercolour forms:

Watercolour is based upon using water for the better of the painting. The brush defines the amount of water absorbed and further placed on paper, larger brushes cover larger areas while smaller brushes absorb less water but more colour pigment better for detailed areas. Brushstrokes can be used at an angle to apply overall even colouring and one shade. Watercolour is not just water and a palate, water and inks can be used to further enhance or bleach upon inks for various. + it is done on a gun strip to strecth the paper and retaillaite the wrinkles that takes place in the paper after water colour.

Monday January 15th - First lesson on practice:

Wednesday January 17th - Second lesson on practice and finish:

What Worked Well (WWW)

- The contrast between the blue mellow sky and the dark shadowed building, they in a way matched and fit together creating an aesthetic I found very pleasing.

- My inability to actual make the background one shade of blue actual gave a potential gradient to the sky that was realistic but the opposite side of the gradient to the actual photograph, none the less the gradient worked.

- The use of minimal detail only slightly within the picture (buildings ventilators, windows etc) gave it a minimalist and calm output rather than a crowed which I thought was appropriate to the overall dimensions and apperance of the piece itself.

Even Better If (EBI)

- The clouds played a huge role in the original photograph which I believe was a missing component of my piece that could have been added to make it better and further enhance the sky.

- If I was able to control the darkness of the watercolour with more efficiency some shadows would look more dimensional rather than many shades in a shadow for example in the right hand corner.

- The sky's gradient is going from dark to light from left to right which is vice versa in the original hence something that has not been mimicked correcty from the source drawing although it is also linked to my lack of efficiency in watercolour control in large areas. Which can be further improved with practice.

FINAL PIECE PROCESS:

Pre-Brief Inspiration: focal point; digital collage or any form of digital art

Mind Map of Ideas: potential ideas

KEY POINTS!1!

- Place: field trip 1

- Use photos and objects

- Media: digital

- Type: digital collage

- Mood: cloud nine

- Digital parts: overlapping, moving, cut & doodles

- Statement: display emotions in area: cloud nine

- Make it odd

Statement of Intent:

I intend to with emphasis portray the emotion of being on cloud nine within my final piece. This is the emotion I felt within the location of my source images. The location being the field trip around school.  I want to communicate my experience of being within that location through a digital collage using ALL source material found within the including all 15 best images and all images of the object found within this field trip.

The final piece itself will not have a focal point as my experienced did not have one, hence it will emphasis towards all parts of the trip through using all aspects of that trip for example the sky, scenery, animals and much more. The sky will although play a huge role in reflecting the emotions as I believe it was a huge role in my experience that day but once again not the entire focal point.

I will display my piece through a digital collage using adobe photoshop and further techniques such as GIFs, overlapping, taking specific parts of image and much more to reflect the mood.

My collage will relate to all artists shown in the inspiration section above which make of many online anonymous artists along known artists, the common factor of the images above are they are odd. Odd implying different, they are conveying a message through images placed in odd ways hence catching the attention of the audience, for example some have mismatch objects within the same scene or the sea upside down and so on.

Specifically, I found Guille Pachelo's digital collages to be truly inspiring and what I will relate my piece to as it conveys a message through a range of colour, words, objects and everything! Unlike Pachelo's piece mine will convey a message related to the objects specifically and not an indirect metaphor, hence conveying what I felt directly within the images I collage. Overall, at the end of the creation of this piece I will know that I would have been successful at creating my intent:

1. When any person who looks at the piece is able to see somewhat a message of happiness from the constant location of collage of images from my experience in that landscape.

2. There is a wide variety of features and aspects from my experience such as the sky, scenery, animals and much more.

Whole process:

the star indicates that this is the final form of that trial

What I did : Today was the first full lesson in which I took the begin of starting my final piece, my first task was to download photoshop successfully and further play around with it to understand the basic tools and key elements of the program. For the remaining time of the lesson I began my first trial and first digital collage that I might consider as a final piece. This included making the cropping of main "monuments" within my final piece and playing with the colour scale of the images as you are able to see:

Lesson 1: Monday 5th February 2018

Photographic evidence: Trial 1 PART A

Note: from Monday to Wednesday there is a large change as creating does not take a while it is learning how to use photshop

Lesson 2: Wednesday 7th February 2018

What I did : Within todays lesson I furthered developed the first trial for my final piece through adding the remaining buildings within my 15 images. Along with this I picked parts of the sky I loved and used many sky parts to make up the sky in the picture as you can see. Like Guille Pachelo's pieces there are many "monuments" or buildings to represent what is being stated and they come together to represent what I saw. Along with this I randomly placed part of the record (an object I found in the field trip) and yellow stripes within the image to add more to my theme of happiness. This is the finish of my first trial. I believe it displays one way of showing my experience but there are alternatives! I will continue developing more ideas and creating content with my experience. But this is trial 1. Trial 1 of experience 1.

Photographic evidence: Trial 1 PART B

Lesson 3: Monday 12th February 2018

Photographic evidence: Trial 2 PART A

What I did : In todays lesson I began a new "canvas" on photoshop and further created a new outlook upon my experience using the source material, through cutting, resizing, positioning and just creating an alternative outlook to the aesthetic I intended to make using Pachelo's technique of giving importance to monuments or buildings, I enlarged them and placed them around and specifically upside down to have a change. The use of yellow is remarking the feeling if happiness and is specifcally will be like a sun as it is in my opinion a large part of my happiness in all my experiences. The sun is the source of thriving and life, a source of glowing. It is unifinished here and will be further continued.

Additional Time: Tuesday 13th February 2018

Photographic evidence: Trial 2 PART A

What I did : I further continued my second trial and finished it through adding the remaining components of the sun by cutting a yellow colour and resizing and positioning to create the sun aspect in a swirl to add to the aesthetic of the piece. Finishing trial 2.

Lesson 4: Wednesday 14th February 2018

What I did : Within this lesson I was inspired, inspired much more to express what I experienced at that landscape hence I create three more trials. A large time improvement from how long it took to create the previous two trials over the course of 2 and bit more lessons. The change of outlook within each of these trials now is that each display a "monument" more like a building that we saw in the landscape area. Each building is "distorted" or depicted in a slanted odd way hence implicating a metaphor much like the artist Guille Pachelo intended in his digital art. My metaphor for each piece is that not all things seem to be the same displayed thorough the many diverse angles of that same building. In my experience in that field trip there were so many buildings that at times I would be surrounded by too many or unable to recognise buildings I had walked past by. Like they had been masked, hence why the buildings are distorted. TO follow my theme of happiness and "cloud nine" I added lots of yellow stars to add a positive touch that these masked or distortion of the same building were not to be seen by a negative or but the beauty to explore and forget hence why it is important at times like this to display our memories of that place. In terms of the process I used the same cutting, resizing and positioning to create the three additional trials.

Photographic evidence: Trial 3, 4 & 5

Note: although stated in my statement of intent my outcome will be ONE final piece including all components stated in the statement of intent, I have decided to create a series of final pieces that will still display ALL factors of the statement of intent as I believe all my trials are unique but apply this as well.

Additional time : Friday 16th February 2018

Photographic evidence: Trial 6

Within this last lesson I had decided to be done, that the 5 final pieces in my series was enough for me to be satisfied or "done" with. But I decided to create a final of my final piece series that expressed everything and used ALL source material. In the images aside everything is in black and white because I found to be more recognising; the area and how it looked like physically rather that to the eye with colour. Along with this once again there is use of yellow stars to go along with the theme and use of the numbers 9 in yellow, the specific number 9 as the "cloud 9" happiness and 2 zeros for clouds. It is in yellow to match the happiness aesthetic. In the right bottom corner there is a screenshot that is one of the only sources used that it is not from the experience but it plays a huge role in this piece as the screenshot when looked upon in detail, is a porgram running and further a delete of the program and it stating" this programming is still running do you want to kill it?". Implying this is the kill or "end" of me intrepreting my experience. Lastly, the reason that only the object I picked up being in colour  is to differentiate the before and the after of my experience, what I experience and further what I will still "experience" or remember when I see again. In all, this final piece sums up my experience and completes a series of 6 final pieces labeled "Season 1 Episode 1" as we experienced this on January (season 1) and the first week Jan 8th (episode 1). Inspired by the song season 2 episode 26 by Glass Animals.

A series: Season 1 episode 1

Summative Reflection:

There are various areas I would like to discuss of the final pieces, the main concepts that I have attempted to incorporate are; modules of the statement of intent (theme, source material and Guille Pachelo - GENERAL LANDSCAPE EXPERIENCE), a bit of myself, approaches to learning and to learn new skills in the process.

I believe when I look at my series of 6 pieces labeled "season 1, episode 1" I have incorporated all four of the areas above and have fully displayed my own experience of the landscape:

In terms of the statement of intent, I had 2 specifications along with the adaptation of the digital artist Guille Pachelo's artist. I believe i have incorporated my first specification: "When any person who looks at the piece is able to see somewhat a message of happiness from the constant location of collage of images from my experience in that landscape." Through the use of yellow stars and the "overwhelming" feeling from the overlap and many use of images I believe my pieces represents the location of my landscape as all my images were from there except for one along the feeling/theme of happiness from the mood created. Specifically in my last trial with the use of yellow stars and numbers contrast on black and white gave the yellow importance and value of the numerical 9 and may make the connection with the audience that 9 is a could. This implies I have implemented the theme of being on "cloud 9" of happiness and the dominant location of the place this took place. On the other hand, my second specification: "There is a wide variety of features and aspects from my experience such as the sky, scenery, animals and much more." In total in terms of images from my trip to my landscape I used a total of 15 resource images that included the sky in many shades within the same time, the scene including various buildings, rocks, plants and many photographs of the same resource object I found on the trip to the area. This implies I have placed a spectrum of aspects of the landscape into my pieces. Lastly, a large part of the digital artist Guille Pachelos work was to metaphorically imply something using buildings/monuments. I wanted to adapt his method and display an indirect metaphor or just a message of how my experience went using buildings which I believe I did in 2 of the trials in my series. In all, my series have reached the success I attempted to incorporate in terms of the theme, location, features of location and incorporation of Guille Pachelo's ideas.

Next, every person feels different about their experience somewhere which is why you yourself makeup the memory, your personality, who you are plays a huge role in what you are or in this example a landscape makes you feel. Which is why not only does all my pieces display the landscape but it displays the landscape through my peephole. At times distorted, as as stated in my process "not all things seem to be the same displayed thorough the many diverse angles of that same building. In my experience in that field trip there were so many buildings that at times I would be surrounded by too many or unable to recognise buildings I had walked past by. Like they had been masked, hence why the buildings are distorted." Along with this I incorporated my favourite colour also a colour I think represents my happiness; yellow, in forms of numbers and stars. Lastly, I incorporated one image, the only other source image not from the experience, a screenshot when looked upon in detail, is a program running and further a delete of the program and it stating" this programming is still running do you want to kill it?". Implying this is the kill or "end" of me interpreting my experience and also one of my hobbies; programming. Connecting to the landscape in many ways as it was in my last piece implying it is the finish of my interpretation of my experience.

In terms of the ATL (approaches to learning) skills incorporated into the process, I believe I specifically developed self-management skills within the process through my expectation to create more than 1 trial and fully display my experience. I had to spread my time across the 4 lessons given and over to the additional time. This showed that I understood some components took longer than others for me to fulfil my expectations hence I created more time than I would have if I had not managed my time. Along with this, I believe there was also incorporation of the ATL skill of communication, not communication to others but communication of what I am feeling visually. This developed my various areas of HOW to communicate and HOW to manage myself more efficiently.

The last area incorporated in the pieces is my development of skills, specifically skills in photoshop. When I started photoshop I had no clue upon what I could do and how I would be able to do it. Through time I learnt how to make a specific size of a canvas, place images I wanted to do in those canvas's and change those images through resizing, cropping, taking out specific parts, rotating and positioning to make a huge picture. Along with this I learnt many more options upon photoshop that I can use forever in my work. Which I already have for my english formative.

In all, my series have reached the entire success criteria of my intent with the change of many final pieces rather than one, it has incorporated myself in various ways, developed self management and communication skills and has further pushed my limits to learn new skills. In all I have displayed everything I wanted to have in my experience to this landscape. If i were to improve, I would have incorporated my friends more or dedicated one trial to them. As they play a huge role in my happiness in the experience. Along with this I would wanted to incorporate more diverse technques in photoshop as at times i used tools repeatedly. To summarise, I am happy with the outcome and believe I have given what I wanted to but I can alays improve with the 2 improvements above and more.
